Robert A. Jergens, of Sumner, died Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner celebrated by Rev. Daniel Knipper. Military Rites will follow at the Veterans Tribute Park conducted by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner and Brandenburg-Krueger Post #4013 V.F.W. of Tripoli. Visitation will be held at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12th, and for one hour preceding services time at the church on Monday.
Robert Allen, son of Howard and Emmaline (Walsh) Jergens was born October 5, 1940, in West Bend, Iowa. He received his education in the West Bend Schools graduating from West Bend High School in 1958, and just recently attended his 60th High School Reunion. Bob would later receive his Associates Degree. He served in the United States Army from December 5, 1960 until being honorably discharged on March 26, 1962. On January 21, 1961, he was united in marriage with Joan Johnson at St. Mary’s Church in Rochester, New York. Bob worked as a Superintendent of the municipal electric plant in West Bend for several years prior to taking the same position at the light plant in Sumner in January of 1979. He was a long time member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner, where he was very active and served as Commander for twelve years. Bob enjoyed fishing down at their cabin, playing cards and having coffee with his friends, but most especially, he cherished time with family.
Bob is survived by his children, Gail (Kent) Wolfe of West Bend, Sharon (Dean Harville) Winger of Boscobel, Wisconsin, Dave (Anne) Jergens of Fairbank, Doug (Amy) Jergens of Gill, Colorado, Mike (Pam) Jergens of Sumner, and Greg (Lindsey) Jergens of Marengo; eighteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; eight siblings, Irene Frederiksen of West Bend, Marge Schmidt of Emmetsburg, Dale (Pam) Jergens of Guntersville, Alabama, twin brother, Richard “Putter” (Darlene) Jergens of Gilmore City, Helen (Jim) Carrigan of Emmetsburg, Janet (Larry) Bruggeman of Hoskins, Nebraska, Judy (Kenny) Habben of Humboldt, and Joe Jergens of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joan who died March 4, 2017; brother, Donald Jergens; sister, Jane Hanselman; and three brothers-in-law, Richard Hanselman, Lawrence Frederiksen, and Don Schmidt.
